A BIM-based tool for life cycle management of road

What is SPIM?

SPIM (Sustainable Pavement Information Modelling) is a research project that aims to integrate environmental, economic, and social sustainability parameters into the design, construction, and management processes of Italian road pavements through the use of Building Information Modelling (BIM) platforms.

The goal is to develop a digital BIM platform integrated with sustainability parameters (LCSA) and existing Pavement Management Systems (PMS), to support road authorities in making more informed and sustainable decisions throughout the entire life cycle of the infrastructure.

SPIM main objectives

  • Integrate sustainability parameters into BIM, extending its use beyond design and construction to include the life cycle management of road pavements.

  • Develop LCM (Life Cycle Management) guidelines for Italian road pavements, updating the methodological framework of the PavementLCM project.

  • Create a BIM-LCSA platform, integrated with Pavement Management Systems (PMS), for the automated assessment of sustainability performance.

Ongoing Case Studies

The new Pedemontana of Palermo project involves the construction of a new highway that directly connects the A19 “Palermo – Catania” and the A29 “Palermo – Mazara del Vallo”. This will help rationalize both extra-urban and interprovincial traffic, which currently travels, along with Palermo's urban traffic, on the only existing high-speed link between the two highways: Viale della Regione Siciliana, a fully-fledged "urban" artery.
The variant of Strada Statale 115 “Sud Occidentale Sicula” is a key element of regional road infrastructure, serving as the only high-speed route along Sicily’s southern coast. It not only provides a direct connection between major coastal cities but also functions as the preferred route for long-distance traffic crossing the island. Additionally, running along the southern coast, SS 115 acts as the main collector for roads serving the inland areas.

SPIM is a PRIN-funded project carried out through a collaborative effort between
